Ashburton

Altrusa is an international non-profit organisation making our local communities better through leadership, partnership, and service.

Our club offers an opportunity to make a real difference in Ashburton. We undertake a variety of service, literacy and fundraising projects each year.

We are seeking new volunteers to join our organisation and make a difference. Our members are from varying occupations and lifestyles, all sharing an interest in community service and enjoying the friendship, fun and satisfaction that comes from working together for the benefit of others.

Our Projects

Making small cardboard boxes to hold film negatives which have been donated to the Ashburton Museum

Presented almost all the primary and intermediate schools in Ashburton with copies of the reading programme Audio Visual Achievement in Literacy, Language and Learning (AVAILLL).

Organised a range of stalls for the family fun day held to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the town’s domain. Money raised was presented to Riding for the Disabled, the Ashburton Art Gallery, and the Ashburton Museum.

Maintain a garden dedicated to the memory of stillborn babies. The club installed the garden at the Ashburton Cemetery in 1996 and has looked after it ever since. It contains a large rock with a plaque that reads “For all our babies, briefly known, forever loved”.

Participating in Books on Wheels for delivery to housebound people once a fortnight.

Held a day for people who are caring for partners or family members, treating them to a day out and a session where they could try their hand at flower arrangement.
